One study that has been cited frequently was a research trial that involved only 26 men and lasted only 12 weeks. The men took 250 mg of 10% forskolin extract twice a day and experienced improved body composition and decreased body fat. But most experts are calling for more research before we know if forskolin can really help you lose weight.
For example, in a review of nutrition supplements published in Obesity Reviews, researchers acknowledge the limited research into the plant substance and state that “more work is required before forskolin can be recommended as a fat metabolism-enhancing substance.” And the National Institutes of Health “NIH” agrees. The government agency reports that the product has shown no affect on body weight.
Is Forskolin Safe For Weight Loss
What is it used for?
Traditional uses: This species and other related species were used in many traditional medical systems. Traditional medical uses include the treatment of digestive disorders (stomachache, gastric and intestinal spasm, nausea, as a purgative), skin (burns, wounds, insect bites, allergies), infections (eg, syphilis, ringworm), and other conditions, including neck stiffness, and rheumatism, and to induce menstruation and as an oral contraceptive. Forskolin has also been used to treat heart, blood, and circulation conditions, and cancers. In the 1970s, the plant’s cardiovascular activity was investigated.
General uses: Forskolin has multiple sites of action and should be used with caution. Forskolin derivatives have been developed for use in heart/blood vessel conditions. Quality clinical trials are lacking to support claims made of the weight loss properties of forskolin, and clinical studies conducted with oral and inhaled forskolin in patients with asthma are limited.
Why do people take forskolin?
People take forskolin supplements for many reasons. But very little substantial evidence exists to back its use for any health condition.

Forskolin has a long history as a folk remedy for asthma. Some research supports that. Forskolin appears to work in a way similar to certain types of conventional asthma drugs, by boosting the levels of a compound called cyclic AMP. This helps relax the muscles around the bronchial tubes to make breathing easier.
Forskolin has also been used to try to treat glaucoma. But there is no proof that it works. A small study indicates that forskolin may help relieve pressure in the eyes, which is often seen in glaucoma. But the study was done on healthy people. Forskolin has not been tested on people with glaucoma.
Another potential use of forskolin is for people with idiopathic congestive cardiomyopathy, which can cause heart failure. In a small study, patients who took forskolin through an IV showed improved heart function.
Optimal doses for forskolin have not been established for any condition. Also, as with supplements generally, the quality of the active ingredients and the level of concentration in products that contain forskolin vary from maker to maker. Some experts recommend that forskolin only be taken under the supervision of a health care professional.
What are the risks of taking forskolin?
It is not known whether taking forskolin is safe, because it has not been thoroughly studied. Some negative reactions to forskolin have been reported. These include:
- Flushing and low blood pressure when taken through an IV
- Upper respiratory tract irritation, cough, tremor, and restlessness when inhaled
- Stinging of the eyes and enlarging of the blood vessels in the eyes
- Headache and increased heart rate
People taking blood thinners or anti-platelet drugs should not take forskolin. Also, certain high blood pressure drugs may interact with forskolin, including:
- Calcium channel blockers.
Avoid taking forskolin if you take such medications. Forskolin should also be avoided if you have polycystic kidney disease. The safety of forskolin in pregnant and breastfeeding women is not known, so they should avoid it. Talk to your doctor about potential risks before you take forskolin or any other dietary supplement.
